Donald Knuth, known for his invention of the Tex and scripting language Metafont, believed that typefaces should vary from each other and not all the typefaces should look identical. In his publications “The Concept of a Meta-Font”, Donald Knuth stated that “The utility of parametric variations comes from mankind’s need for variety” and that “…we don’t all want to live in identical houses or drive identical cars” (Knuth, 1982).
